Question: Has anyone had to replace the Temperture Coolant Sensor?

The AUDI Dealership in San Jose, CA is asking for about 600 to do this, expensive?

I recently replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor on my 2002 A4 Quatro - Turbo 1.8 model. Using the CHILTON guide to locate the correct sensor and organize my work.. I had to make 3 different calls to parts stores to find the blue (more expensive) sensor. The $20 sensor included a new "o" ring. When replacing the sensor I disconnected the sensor and pried open the retaining clip.When pulling the sensor out some of the coolant 1/4 cup splashed out from the tube holdnig the sensor. I used a towel below the sensor to catch the liquid. Its an easy installation.

$600 is absurd. I have done this job on my (Milpitas based) '98 A4 Q with 231k mi twice. There are various parts suppliers on-line who have this part for something on the order of $20 plus shipping.It's actually very easy to do, don't be intimidated. Try and have someone with you who knows cars when you do it and don't try it on a hot car. One caution. If I remember correctly there were two different clips used to hold the thing in. One was plastic, the other metal and they work interchangably. I'd have one on hand when you do the replacemtent just in case you break the plastic one when it comes out. Not likely but possible. Good luck.

get the original part at the dealer it will cost you only about 44 dollars. It does not worth it to get the off the market Temp sensor, the specification may be different which can cause your cooling fan to go on everytime you start the car even when the temperature is way below freezing mark. I had used the off the market product and i ended up doing the job twice. Follow the thread above it is an easy and simple process.
