Question: when to replace brakes

I had to brake hard the other day after a semi lost a tire in front of me. I noticed a grinding noise while braking firm It happened in the front brakes.
Anyone else have an OPTIMA? Was the grinding due to ABS? Or, is this an excuse to get slotted/vented rotors and dual-piston front calipers?
