2009 Nissan GT-R 1
2009 Nissan GT-R

DriverSide Overview
Few Japanese vehicles manage the kind of clout the indomitable Nissan GT-R brings to the table. The GT-R, known in certain circles by the name of the sedan it was once based on, Skyline, doesn’t need to demand respect, as anyone who has ever run into the legendary badge on the grille knows what the vehicle is capable of. An all-wheel drive, twin-turbocharged monster, the GT-R devours asphalt and offers brute strength and speed at will. Ribbons of highway will evaporate quicker than gasoline on hot asphalt with nothing more than a push of your right foot, and any number of twisties and off-camber apexes are nothing than fodder for the GT-R’s precision-tuned suspension. The GT-R offers supercar performance for a fraction of the typical supercar price. This is the kind of vehicle that frustrates Ferrari and Lamborghini owners the way a successful peasant uprising would enrage a monarch. The Nissan GT-R is a clear shot across the bow of high-performance automakers everywhere, proving that world-class power and precision does not require a world-class price tag and a second mortgage. If you’ve got the money and the inclination for speed, there is no better performance car on the market today.

What's to Like
The power is troublesomely addictive. Plant your right foot and you’ll think twice about doing it again as you are pushed back into your seat, G-forces condensing your innards into goo – we mean that in the best possible way. The launch from 0 to 60 happens so quickly – just 3.3 seconds – that you barely have time to register legal speeds before the car is pouncing on 100-plus. The GT-R offers the kind of oomph that will give you a racecar driver's God complex, in a good way, of course.

What's Not to Like
The GT-R’s exterior styling is clearly Japanese and that may or may not be to every one's taste. There’s little that is classically beautiful about the car from the exterior. Instead, it works on redefining what we commonly conceive as gorgeous, and in our eyes, we like what we see. There’s a purposeful look to the car that clearly exudes power, and it should grow on the public after a bit.

The Drive:
DriverSide Driving Impressions

Spend any amount of time behind the wheel of Nissan’s GT-R and you become keenly aware of its purpose. The GT-R is built to excel at being fast and it communicates that point in a way that all of the automotive reviews and all of Nissan's' pamphlets never could. The sound of the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-6 is a symphony of speed, whispering promises of untold tarmac domination. While some may think the suspension is clearly too stiff to endure on a day-to-day basis, the GT-R wasn’t manufactured to compete with the legions of Corollas on the daily commute death march out there. The GT-R was purposefully engineered to posses the perfectly manicured asphalt of road courses across the world, and to that extent, it’s as close to perfect a car produced.

Engine and Drivetrain
The GT-R is powered by a 3.8-liter, twin-turbo charged V-6 engine that produces around 480 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. We say around because each engine is hand produced – like a Kiton suit – and inconsistencies in the procedure have led to variations in the amount of power of each engine, with some having more than 500 horsepower. Each engine is mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission with three modes depending on the severity of driving. The transmission puts power to all four wheels via one of the most beautiful all-wheel drive systems on the planet. You want proof of performance, check the multitude of configurable electronic gauges on the flat screen in the center stack.

Interesting Vehicle Features and Options
The only real option is a $2,050 Premium Edition with summer tires, more airbags and a better sound system, which is a good option to check off. An excellent feature is the paddle-shifting transmission; it is a true wonder, matching the rpms for downshifts, and in R mode, determining what the next gear selection should be based on throttle position. The GT-R's brakes – with Brembo performance rotors with 6-piston calipers up front and 4-piston calipers in the rear – are impressive, bringing the hefty car to a halt almost before you decide to plant your foot on the pedal.

Key Technology Evaluation
If you opt for the pricier GT-R Premium, you’re treated to an impressive 11-speaker digital Bose stereo system that’s linked to the standard 30-gig music storage device. The GT-R also comes standard with an in-dash CompactFlash reader, XM satellite, speed-sensitive volume control and 7-inch touch screen navigation. Aside from providing directions, the touch screen can also display a multifunction meter that shows everything from the amount of G-force encountered during cornering to lap times and throttle position and, in true geekboy style, was designed by the company that developed the Gran Turismo video game.

Green Evaluation/Gas Mileage
If you own a GT-R, fuel economy isn’t your primary concern. With gas mileage that’s on par with most large trucks, the GT-R is a thirsty monster. The GT-R tends to pull in 15 mpg city and around 22 mpg highway. The good news is, the touch screen can be configured to display fuel economy on the fly, guilt tripping you into staying out of the throttle as much as possible, which is a hard thing to do.

A Closer Look:  Vehicle Details
Interior

The GT-R offers plenty of leather and suede to greet both driver and occupant, with comfortable racing seats with high bolsters to keep everyone planted during cornering. The power adjustable driver's seat is even more trick and fits like a glove. The GT-R’s steering wheel provides a number of controls just within finger reach, and the bold gauges with emphasis on the tachometer are clearly geared toward performance.

Exterior
Outside, the GT-R looks and sits bigger than it actually is and displays a muscular and squat stance that belies the power under the hood. The sloping roofline drops into the rear deck somewhat abruptly, giving the GT-R a rakish coupe feel that is undeniably sporty. In the rear, the classic Skyline circular tail lights tie the GT-R into its long line of performance heritage and the GT-R shows off its red Brembo brakes through attractive twenty-inch six-spoke wheels. The GT-R looks like a tiny Japanese powerlifter after three cycles on the 'roids – all bulges, ripped muscles and brooding anger. Whatever you do, don't make it angry.

Market Segment and Pricing
The Nissan GT-R is priced at $69,850 for the anything-but-basic base model and $71,900 for the Premium Edition, though you can expect some serious dealer mark ups, especially in the early months of delivery. That number puts it in the ring with bruisers like the Corvette Z06 at $72,125 and the Ford Shelby GT500KR at $79,995, as well as European mainstays like the Porsche 911 Carrera at $73,500. Still, its performance outdoes any of the cars in its price range, reaching for vehicles well over the $100,000 mark. We think, even at over $70K, it's a bargain.

What We Think
What do you want out of your car? If you’re looking for something that announces your wealth as you pull up to the red carpet, there are better choices out there and frankly, you don't deserve this car. If you want a car that exudes track domination and lives on the blistering edge of technology, then the GT-R is the car for you. It lives to show the world all there is to love about raw power. The GT-R is an impressive effort from a company not recently connected with supercar performance. We feel, for the money, there is nothing better out there.
